Here’s the latest update on bike theft in your area. We have seen an increase in the theft of high value e-bikes, including Sur-Ron style bikes, and we want to remind owners to take some simple steps to help protect them. If you own one, please take a few minutes to check how secure your bike is.
USE TWO GOOD QUALITY LOCKS
Don't rely solely on the bikes own steering or ignition lock. The Metropolitan police recommends using TWO quality locks, with at least one being a D-Lock. Where possible, secure the frame to a solid, immovable object. Using two different types of lock can also make it more difficult for thieves.
CONSIDER A GOOD GPS TRACKER
For high value bikes, consider fitting a quality GPS tracker with live tracking and movement alerts. If your bike is stolen, please report it to police and provide any tracker information available. PLEASE DON'T PUT YOURSELF AT RISK OR ATTEMPT TO RECOVER A STOLEN BIKE YOURSELF.
RECORD AND REGISTER YOUR BIKE
Make sure you have a record of the:
- Frame/Serial number
- Make and Model
- Clear Photographs
- Any distinctive features or modifications.
Consider registering and security marking your bike. Having these details readily available can also help establish ownership if your bike is recovered.
SECURE IT AT HOME
Don't assume your bike is safe just because it is inside a garage, shed or communal area. Secure the bike itself and make sure the building or storage area is properly secured.
THINK ABOUT WHERE YOU LEAVE IT
Where possible, use secure well lit locations and avoid leaving your bike unattended for long periods.
IS YOUR E-BIKE LEGAL FOR ROAD USE?
Not every bike marketed as an "e-bike" can legally be ridden on public roads. To qualify as an ELECTRICALLY ASSISTED PEDAL CYCLE (EAPC), a bike must meet specific legal requirements, including having pedals capable of propelling the bike, a maximum continuous rated motor power of 250W, and electrical assistance cutting off at 15.5mph. Some high powered e-bikes and Sur-Ron style bikes do NOT meet these requirements. If a bike does not qualify as am EAPC, different legal requirements apply before it can be used on public roads. Please check that your bike meets the relevant requirements before riding it on public roads.

IF YOUR BIKE IS STOLEN
Report it as soon as possible and provide police with your frame/serial number, photographs, registration details and any tracker information.
